The air filter is one of the most neglected maintenance items, despite its direct effect on engine performance and fuel use. A dirty filter restricts airflow into the engine, throwing off the air-to-fuel ratio.

Key warning signs

• A noticeable rise in fuel consumption.
• Sluggish acceleration or loss of power.
• An odd noise or light whistling on startup.
• A smell of unburned fuel.
• The filter itself looks dark and dust-caked on inspection.

How often should you check it?

Under normal conditions, inspect every 8,000–10,000 km and replace every 15,000–20,000 km. In dusty or unpaved-road areas — common across Syria — check more frequently.
