External Oil Strainer vs. Internal Cartridge: Which Does Your Car Need?

A question we hear often: what's the difference between an external oil strainer and an internal oil cartridge? The answer depends entirely on your engine's lubrication system design.

External (spin-on) oil strainer

This type is a complete unit with its own metal housing, fully installed and removed at every oil change. We stock these for vehicles like Honda, Volvo, and Skoda.

Internal oil cartridge

This type is just the filter element itself, seated inside a fixed plastic or metal housing on the engine — only the cartridge and its rubber seals get replaced. Common on Hyundai (Santa Fe, Veracruz) and Kia Rio.

How to tell which one your car uses

• Check your owner's manual or ask your workshop about the lubrication system type.
• A fixed plastic housing with no separate metal canister usually means an internal cartridge.
• An all-metal filter removed by hand or a special wrench means an external strainer system.
